Growing up
Every so often as a parent you are reminded just how fast your children are growing up. It’s like you’re not paying attention so when you get a reminder, it comes as a bit of shock.
So this morning as I contemplated having a shower, I could hear Noah in his room commenting on his day so far. That’s the way it is with him. None stop commentary on his life. Constant chatter. It’s like CBC radio. Anyhow, I thought that I might kill two birds and bring him into the shower with me.
Now I don’t think this is unusual or weird. Some people might think that showering with your children would do irreparable damage to their psyche but I’m of the opinion that under 3 years old, your children don’t have much of a psyche and they’re not going to remember anything too shocking anyway. Not that I have to justify this at all. I’m just saying is all…
So I get up, fetch Noah from his room and head for the bathroom. Once he realizes what is going on Noah gets right into the spirit of the occasion and starts pulling out his bath toys. All of them. He has mercifully few bath toys but he always has to have all of them with him. I guess you never know what you’re going to need at any given bath time.
At this point I should say a few words about our shower. We have a tiny shower stall that I feel was probably custom made for the niche that it was installed in. On the upside, should you pass out in our shower, you won’t fall very far. You’d have about a 6 inch travel to any one side and then a slow slump to the floor. Having said this, we’ve had our children in the shower with us before, with all the toys, and still have had space to do what we needed to do. Until today. Once Noah had taken up position on the floor, with all the bath toys, I realized that there was really no floor space left. That’s when it hit me. My little boy was growing up. Pretty soon he’ll be taking a shower on his own. Well, almost on his own. I think the bath toys are going to be around for awhile.
